A Photographic Exploration of Western Archetype and Feminine Sovereignty

Cosmic Cowgirl is a contemporary photographic series that reexamines the American Western archetype through the lens of feminine sovereignty and self-authorship. Created in collaboration with custom leather designer Shotgun Chelle, the project positions Western couture not as costume, but as sculptural armor, a tactile expression of resilience, identity, and embodiment.

Set within the Sonoran desert, the landscape operates as both stage and sanctuary. Historically mythologized as a masculine frontier, it becomes in this work a site of reclamation. The central figure stands grounded and self-possessed, occupying space without spectacle or apology. Stillness functions as assertion.

The series incorporates subtle cinematic references to early Western film language... desert arrivals, collective standoffs, horizon-framed silhouettes... yet these motifs are reframed symbolically rather than literally. In the Reservoir Dolls chapter, a collective of women appear together in Western couture, shifting the outlaw narrative from solitary heroism to shared power and creative agency.

Natural desert light, high contrast horizons, and minimal environmental intrusion define the aesthetic approach. Texture... leather against sand, fringe in motion, shadow across skin... creates visual tension between structure and vastness.

At its core, Cosmic Cowgirl investigates identity reconstruction and myth revision. It asks what happens when inherited Western symbolism is reclaimed as lived presence rather than nostalgia.

This is not a return to legend.
It is the authorship of a new one.
